This sea island is only 13 miles long and 5 miles wide, but within this space are diversions galore  including several highly
ranked beaches. All are open to the public and the terrain is solid enough for a number of activities, including shoreline
jogging, game-playing, bicycling or even a beach wedding. Most of the area is backed by natural dunes, serves as a
home to sand critters like crabs, clams, Sand Pipers and Loggerhead turtles, and hosts a generally safe
and inviting atmosphere from one end to the other.

Lifeguards are on duty at major beach sites, including Coligny  Beach located at Pope Avenue and South Forest Beach
Drive.  Restroom facilities, showers, changing rooms, bike racks, vending machines and a playground provide
visitors with all they need for a day on the shore here at this popular spot,
and parking is free.

Similar conveniences can be found at many other beaches including the North Island area, known for being broad and
accessible. Driessen Beach is one portion of this region, and is fairly new to the scene.
Lots of parking spaces as well as all the standard amenities make it a favorite for fun seekers, and overcrowding is not
considered a problem here. Another nearby attraction, Folly Field Beach, is also outfitted with an array of public
facilities, but tends to be more popular; thus if it's peace and quiet you're after it might not be your number one choice.

Alcohol is banned on all Hilton Head beaches, as are fires, fireworks, shark fishing, disturbing the wildlife and littering.
Family friendliness and conservation reign supreme.  While the beach is entirely public, access to it is often limited to
owners of adjacent property or guests of the vacation rentals facing the sea.
In other words, it's possible to discover a stretch of sand and sun with little traffic, even amidst the hubbub
of this vacation hot spot.

Become better acquainted with the island itself by renting a few bicycles and trekking across the various paths,
roads and even the beaches.   The island is completely flat so most people will feel comfy  hopping onto a bike and
setting out for a refreshing, self-guided tour.   Rental rates are hourly, daily or weekly, so there's plenty of time to
traverse the web of paths through
Sea Pines & Palmetto Dunes, along Pope Avenue and William Hilton Parkway.

Keep energy levels sky high by playing tennis at one of the 20 or so well-maintained racquet clubs open to the
public. These regular hard surfaces as well as grass and clay courts help to make Hilton Head one of the top tennis
destinations in the country, and there are also a handful of free public courts located throughout the island. Serious
players and dabblers alike can find a place to hit a few balls, day or night, and lessons and pro shops are first-class.
Van Der Meer Tennis University is an international training ground and professional matches are held here.

In addition to exploring the beaches, there is much to see and do while riding the waves around Hilton Head
Island. Stick to the water by hopping on board a boat for a tour, dinner cruise or fishing expedition. Shelter Cove
Harbour, South Beach Marina and Harbour Town are all good points of departure for any number of ocean
adventures.  Watching others troll for swordfish, grouper, bluefish or bass or joining in the action can both be
undertaken, and even kids can receive instruction from among the different tour operations.

Outlying islands possessing untouched habitats and historical significance make for an exciting afternoon
spent; vacation rental guests of
Hilton Head often charter boats to Daufuskie Island, Pinckney Island, and even
Savannah. Dolphin cruises are another fun distraction, as they provide a glimpse of these curious creatures as well
as several points of interest including homes, marshlands, plantations and other wildlife.

For a getaway to the pinnacle of outdoor leisure pursuits that happens to be balanced with loads of natural
beauty,
Hilton Head Island is the place to focus on. One hundred miles south of Charleston and a million miles away
from responsibility, this play land for all ages satisfies over two million travelers each year with
ample beaches, fine weather, and golf courses around every corner.
A unique aspect of Hilton Head is its plantations.  Much of the island is divided into distinct  plantations.
Sea Pines requires a special permission or a flat, per-vehicle daily fee to enter. These funds go to support road
maintenance and related upkeep expenses so most people don't mind them.
Many popular attractions are not in plantations.
